Cheap Removable Blackout Window Coverings – Better Than Film, Shades or Curtains

New references and articles explaining Window Curtains And Shades, Cheap Removable Blackout Window Coverings – Better Than Film, Shades or Curtains.

I’m a bit of a light sleeper and have struggled with light leak around my window curtains. I bought them because they look great during the day when pulled up but they just don’t work very well at night (or in the morning when the sun comes up). For a while I tried pull down window shades but light still got in… Later I considered film but didn’t want a blurry window or depressing darkness during the day. I wanted something that would match the woodwork and blend in, something that wouldn’t cost hundreds of dollars, just a cheap but effective solution that would be removable. After a lot of consideration and asking around, I decided to cut sheets of construction paper to the appropriate size then hang them on clear Command Adhesive hooks. To make sure they wouldn’t rip off easily, I punched circular holes and reinforced with clear tape on both sides. The end result are affordable, interchangeable completely blackout window coverings that cost less than $50 and one hour to make. You will need a pencil for marking, a straight edge for drawing cut lines, scissors, some clear tape and a hold puncher. This is a non-permanent solution because the Command Adhesive hooks come off without leaving any gunk behind. The one challenge that remains with this solution is condensation on windows. I have heard that some films create insulation and stop this sort of condensation but have not confirmed this. Be Sure to remove the paper window coverings during the day when not in use so that any water can evaporate and not damage the window sills or frames.

Steps: Measure window size, buy cardboard sheets, tape and cut cardboard sheets, apply Command Adhesive hooks on window frames, cut holes in the cardboard window coverings to fit on the hooks, tape over the holes and re-punch them for maximum strength, hang the black out window coverings.
